Netcraft is an Internet services company based in Bath, England.
Netcraft provides webserver and webhosting market-share analysis, including web server and operating system detection. In some cases, depending on the queried server's operating system, their service is able to monitor uptimes[1]; uptime performance monitoring is a commonly used factor in determining the reliability of a web hosting provider[2].
Netcraft also provides security testing, and publishes news releases about the state of various networks that make up the Internet. These news releases and statistics are widely referred to and considered relevant by the technology and Internet press[3], and the company is listed as a news outlet on Google News and Yahoo News[4][5]. In late October 2006, Netcraft identified 100 million Web sites with domain names and content on them, of which 47 to 48 percent represented active sites.
The company is famous for its free anti-phishing toolbar for the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers. A study commissioned by Microsoft concluded that Netcraft's toolbar was among the most effective tools to combat phishing on the Internet, although this has since been superseded by Microsoft's own Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3 RC3 with Microsoft Phishing Filter. [6]
Bob Metcalfe, inventor of Ethernet, and co-founder of 3com, pronounced Netcraft "cool", while Tim O'Reilly called www.netcraft.com the best known example of a site devoted to tracking technology on the Internet.citation needed
